Spring Security Checklist: Protect Your Home, Business, and Car This Season

Spring is almost here, bringing warmer weather, spring cleaning, and, unfortunately, security risks that many people overlook. As you refresh your home and prepare for the season ahead, take a few minutes to ensure your locks, keys, and security systems are in top shape. Here’s a simple checklist to keep your home, business, and car secure this spring.

1. Home Security: Post-Winter Lock Checkup

Cold weather can take a toll on your locks and doors. Before spring is in full swing, check the condition of your locks and entry points.

  • Inspect door locks for stiffness or difficulty turning the key. If a lock is sticking, a dry graphite lubricant can help. Avoid WD-40, as it can attract dirt and grime.

  • Check door alignment—winter weather can cause frames to shift, leading to poorly fitting locks. If your door doesn’t close properly, it might be time for an adjustment or new hardware.

  • If you’ve lost track of who has keys to your home, consider rekeying your locks. This is an affordable way to ensure old keys no longer work.

2. Spring Cleaning: Organize Your Keys and Security Devices

Spring is a great time to declutter—including your keyring and security setup.

  • Found old keys during spring cleaning? Label them or discard unknown ones to avoid confusion later.

  • Make duplicates of frequently used keys so you have spares in case of emergencies.

  • Test any smart locks, cameras, or alarm systems to ensure they’re still functioning properly.

  • If you use a hidden key outside, reconsider its location. Under the doormat or a fake rock is too obvious. A better option is a trusted neighbor or a secure lockbox.

3. Moving Season: Don’t Forget to Rekey!

Spring is a peak season for home sales and rentals. If you’re moving into a new home or apartment, security should be a priority.

  • Always rekey or replace locks when moving into a new property—you never know how many copies of the old keys are floating around.

  • Landlords should rekey between tenants to protect their property and ensure the safety of new renters.

  • If you’re renting a vacation home or Airbnb, consider using a keyless entry system for added security and convenience.

4. Car Lock Maintenance: Avoid Getting Stuck

Springtime temperature changes can cause unexpected issues with car locks and ignitions.

  • If your key is hard to turn in the ignition, it may be worn down. Consider getting a fresh key cut before it leaves you stranded.

  • Clean out keyways in car locks with compressed air to remove dirt and debris from winter road grime.

  • If you only have one car key, now is the time to get a duplicate made—especially before a road trip.

  • If your remote key fob is acting up, replace the battery and test the buttons to ensure it’s working properly.

5. Outdoor & Garage Security: Don’t Overlook Sheds and Entry Points

As the weather warms up, people start using garages, sheds, and backyard spaces more frequently. Make sure your outbuildings are secure.

  • Inspect garage door locks and automatic openers for any malfunctions.

  • If your shed holds valuable tools or equipment, upgrade to a high-security padlock to prevent theft.

  • Consider installing motion-activated lights near exterior doors and garages to deter intruders.

6. Planning a Spring Break Trip? Secure Your Property Before You Go

Traveling for spring break or a weekend getaway? Take some extra precautions to ensure your home stays safe while you’re away.

  • Double-check that all doors and windows are locked before leaving.

  • Avoid announcing your trip on social media until you return to prevent advertising an empty house.

  • Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor instead of hiding one outside.

  • If you’re taking a road trip, make sure you have a spare car key in case of lockouts.
