These days, many cars use smart keys or proximity fobs—just walk up, touch the handle, and you're in. Push a button, and the engine starts. It's convenient, but what happens when the battery in your remote dies? Or worse, when your car’s battery is dead? Suddenly, that fancy key isn't so smart anymore.
That's where the emergency key comes in.
What Is an Emergency Key?
Most proximity fobs contain a small mechanical key inside. This key is often tucked away in a hidden slot and can be used to manually unlock the driver’s door in case of a dead battery or other electronic failure. Without it, if your car’s electronics stop working, you could be completely locked out.
The Common Locksmith Scam
Unfortunately, some less honest locksmiths take advantage of customers by quoting a price for a new smart key but leaving out the emergency key. Since the smart key does everything in normal conditions, many customers don’t realize they’re missing a crucial backup until they actually need it.
Why do they do this? Simple—cutting an emergency key takes extra time, effort, and materials. By skipping it, they cut their costs and increase their profit, all while leaving you vulnerable to getting locked out in the future.
How to Protect Yourself
Ask upfront – If you're getting a smart key replaced, specifically ask whether the price includes the emergency key.
Check your fob – Make sure the replacement fob has a slot for an emergency key and that it actually contains one.
Test it – Before you leave, try using the emergency key in the door to confirm it works. Some vehicles have worn or misaligned locks that might need attention.
Work with an honest locksmith – A reputable locksmith won’t cut corners. They’ll make sure your replacement key includes everything your original did.
At Buffalock and Key, I always include the emergency key when replacing proximity fobs because I know how important it is. If you’re getting a smart key replacement, make sure you get the whole key, not just part of it. It could be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major headache.
